Shira Route – Kilimanjaro Climbing

Offered By: Africantrust Safari

The Shira Route is one of the most scenic and unique ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. Approaching from the west, this route starts at a significantly higher altitude than others, offering immediate, breathtaking views of the Shira Plateau—a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its dramatic geological formations and open moorlands. Unlike the popular Machame Route, the Shira Route begins with a 4x4 drive to the trail head at magnificent Londorossi Gate, bypassing the lower rainforest zone and placing you directly into the heath and moorland zone. This "drive-in" start makes for a shorter first hiking day but requires careful acclimatization.

As you traverse the plateau, you’ll enjoy relative solitude before joining the Machame Route at the iconic Lavender Tower. From there, the path offers the classic Southern Circuit experience: climbing the Great Barranco Wall, crossing the Karanga Valley, and making the final midnight ascent to Uhuru Peak from Barafu Camp.

Tour Features & Highlights

  • Scenic West Approach: Best views of Kibo and Shira Cathedral.
  • High Altitude Start: Drive to 3,500m, maximizing views from Day 1.
  • Low Traffic: Enjoy a quieter, less crowded start on the mountain.
  • Premium Camping: High-quality 4-season sleeping tents.
  • Health Monitoring: Daily pulse oximeter checks (AM/PM).
  • Expert Guides: Wilderness First Responder (WFR) certified.
  • Private Toilet Tents: Clean, private portable toilets included.
  • Ethical Porter Treatment: We strictly adhere to KPAP guidelines.

Activities & Transportation

Activities

Your days on Kilimanjaro are active and varied. Expect 4 to 7 hours of trekking daily, carrying only a light daypack (water, camera, jacket). The terrain shifts from open heath to alpine desert and scree. Highlights include the non-technical scramble up the Barranco Wall (an exhilarating 1-hour climb) and the challenging Summit Night, a 12-15 hour marathon starting at midnight under the stars.

Transportation

We provide all ground transportation using well-maintained, private vehicles:

  • Airport Transfers: Private pick-up and drop-off at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO).
  • Trailhead Transfer: 4x4 Land Cruisers are used to navigate the rugged track to Londorossi Gate and Morum Barrier.
  • Hotel Logistics: Comfortable transfers between your Moshi hotel and the mountain gates.

Accommodation & Meals

We believe comfort is key to a successful summit. Our mountain accommodation and dining are designed to keep you rested and energized.

  • Mess Tent: A large dining tent with tables, chairs, and solar lighting for meals and briefings.
  • Toilet Tent: A private, portable chemical toilet for your group's exclusive use.

Why Choose This Tour?

The Shira Route is perfect for climbers who want to avoid the initial rainforest hike of the Machame route and start high for immediate views. It offers a wilderness feel in the first few days, away from the crowds. If you are confident in your ability to acclimatize to a starting altitude of 3,500m, this route offers the most spectacular opening days on the mountain.

Guidelines & Preparation

Climbing Kilimanjaro is a serious physical undertaking. Proper preparation is essential.

Start training at least 3 months in advance. Focus on cardio (running, cycling, swimming) and hiking with a weighted backpack. Leg strength and core stability are crucial. Aim to be comfortable walking 6-8 hours uphill.

Key items: Warm waterproof boots (broken in!), -20°C sleeping bag (rental available), thermal layers (no cotton), waterproof jacket/trousers, trekking poles, headlamp with spare batteries, and a good daypack (30-40L).

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

The best months are January to March (warm and dry) and June to October (cooler but dry). April, May, and November are the rainy seasons, which make the trails muddy and slippery.

It is considered Moderately Difficult. The main challenge is the high starting altitude (3,500m), which can trigger altitude sickness if you don't acclimatize well. The hiking terrain is similar to Machame—steep in parts but not technical.

Yes, most travelers require a visa. You can obtain a simplified e-Visa online or get one on arrival at Kilimanjaro Airport (approx. $50 or $100 for US citizens). Please check your specific country requirements.

Tipping is customary on Kilimanjaro. It is not included in the price. We recommend approximately $250-$300 per climber for the entire crew, distributed at the climbing exit gate ceremony. We provide a detailed tipping guide upon booking.
